Engineering Students – The Writing is on the Wall… Are you READING?

India is still a developing nation. The strength of India can be its 1.39 billion population. But are these resources used efficiently to become a developed nation? Similarly, this question arises, whether our engineering graduates are employable?

One million engineering graduates were produced in India at engineering colleges, this year. Approximately 10% of these engineering colleges impart quality education. According to recent reports, approximately 20% engineers are employable.

So, why these 80% engineers are not employable?

There can be many reasons. Let me collate a few important ones:

  1. First, poor practical approach in the syllabus. Students can implement what they have learnt theoretically, only with hands-on experience.
  2. Secondly, the content update process takes huge time. The way things are going digital and getting automated, the subjects like AI, ML, IoT, Cybersecurity, Cloud computing, Blockchain need faster updates to match the implementation pace.
  3. Thirdly, the training methodology. It needs an overhaul. A training methodology – sage on the stage is still followed by most of the engineering colleges. Instead of providing information to memorize, students should be challenged with “scenario-based” or “problem-based” content and involve them in solving a problem.
  4. Fourthly, dearth of good teachers. It has been observed that not all colleges have good teachers. Good teachers can really shape the future of the students by developing their base skills.
  5. And last but not the least, the students themselves. Students should work smart to improve themselves by finding internships, joining institutes that train on latest technologies and do some research work.

What is the hiring scenario of engineering graduates post pandemic?

Post pandemic, more or less all job market indicators reflect rise in hiring activities over the past few months and is likely to continue through 2021. The Michael Page Global Survey forecasts 53% of the Indian IT organizations plan to increase their workforce in the current year.

IT organizations are increasingly adopting AI-powered psychometric evaluations, VR and AR-driven simulation tools to test skills of candidates. Smart video interview tools to measure behavioural aspects of a candidate’s profile. Recruiters are also evaluating the factors such as cultural fit, learning skills, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking.

In IT industry, work from home has become a new normal. As there is no limitations of geography, IT organizations have turned to tier-2, tier-3 and tier-4 towns to recruit fresh talent. It is also likely to witness the increased engagement of contract firm workforces in the digital operations of e-commerce, cloud kitchens, banking, insurance, education, healthcare and entertainment industries.

How many jobs are there in the IT sector in India?

The IT sector will grow at a much faster rate in the next 5 years globally. The pandemic has made it clear that without the IT industry everything will become standstill. To meet the global requirements, huge number of jobs will be created. NASSCOM reported that the Indian IT industry is likely to hire over 1,38,000 net new graduate engineers. As per Naukri JobSpeak report, IT-software sector in India recorded a 14% consecutive growth in hiring in May as compared to April this year. This sector will witness a 39% growth in job postings by the end of this financial year.

Which companies hire engineers predominantly?

Largely, the engineering colleges invite IT companies for campus recruitments. These companies recruit approximately 17% of engineering students from these colleges across India. Some of the companies that hire from college campuses are – Cisco Systems, Accenture, Capegemini Engineering, IBM, Mindtree, Tata Consultancy Services, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Infosys, Amazon, Larsen & Toubro Infotech, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, QBurst, SAP, Google, Intuit, Adobe, Microsoft, ServiceNow, ITC Infotech, Happiest Mind Technologies, MakeMy Trip, Freshworks, Dell Technologies, Mastercard, EPAM, Intel Corporation, Tavant, Myntra, Flipkart, First student and many more…

What is the role of IT training Institutes?

There is a clear mismatch between academia courses and industry requirements. Employers need to train graduate engineers once they are employed. This additional trainings are time consuming and costly for the industry. The training institutes providing training and international certifications, balance the industry requirements and job requirements of engineering graduates. This results in job ready graduate engineers at university level itself.
